Shaadi Season Without Gaining Weight: Wedding Food Calories, and a Plan That Still Lets You Enjoy It
Wedding season means dholkis, mehndis, baraats and walimas — and dinner served at eleven at night. Here is what a shaadi plate really costs in calories, how a season of functions adds up, what the research on festive weight gain shows, and a plan that lets you enjoy every function without the kilos.

From October to February, a Pakistani calendar fills with dholkis, mayun, mehndi, baraat and walima — often for several weddings at once. Dinner is served at eleven or later, after hours of waiting, from a buffet of the richest dishes the caterer makes, with an aunty at your elbow saying 'aur lo'. One function changes nothing. A season of them is where many people put on the kilos they spend the spring trying to lose.
What a shaadi plate really costs
| Dish | Typical serving | kcal |
|---|---|---|
| Chicken biryani | 1 plate (300 g) | 550 |
| Mutton qorma / salan | 200 g | 400 or more |
| Chicken karahi | 200 g | 380 |
| Roghni naan | 1 naan | 380 |
| Plain naan | 1 naan | 320 |
| Beef seekh kebab | 1 kebab | 170 |
| Chicken tikka | 2 pieces (150 g) | 280 |
| Zarda | 1 bowl (150 g) | 330 |
| Kheer | 1 bowl (150 g) | 250 |
| Gajar halwa | 100 g | 280 |
| Gulab jamun | 1 piece | 150 |
| Ras malai | 1 piece with milk | 200 |
| Kulfi | 1 stick | 220 |
| Kashmiri (pink) tea | 1 cup | 150 |
| Cola | 1 can (330 ml) | 140 |
Two plates compared
| Plate | What is on it | About |
|---|---|---|
| The usual | 1 plate biryani, 200 g mutton qorma, 1 roghni naan, 2 beef seekh kebabs, a can of cola, 100 g gajar halwa, 2 gulab jamun | 2,390 kcal |
| The smarter plate | 2 pieces chicken tikka, half a plate of biryani, salad, raita, 1 gulab jamun, a diet drink or water | 770 kcal |
The smarter plate is not a sad salad. It has meat, rice and a dessert, and it still has about 56 g of protein. The difference — about 1,600 kcal — is mostly the second carb, the gravy, the cold drink and the second sweet.
How a season adds up
Take a normal dinner at around 700 kcal. The usual shaadi plate is about 1,700 kcal more. Ten functions over the season — two or three weddings with all their events — is roughly 17,000 extra kcal, which at 7,700 kcal per kilo of body fat is about 2.2 kg. Add late nights, missed workouts and the mithai boxes that arrive afterwards, and three or four kilos by February is common.
The research on festive seasons says this weight tends to stay. In a 2000 study in the New England Journal of Medicine, 195 adults gained an average of 0.37 kg over the holiday season and had not lost it by the following spring or autumn. A 2016 analysis in the same journal of nearly 3,000 people in the United States, Germany and Japan found weight rose during each country's festive period and had not fully come off months later. The weight of one season is small; the problem is that it rarely leaves.
There is a hopeful part. A 2014 study in Obesity Facts tracked daily weights of 80 adults and found weight rose at weekends and fell on weekdays — and the people who compensated most during the week were the ones who lost or kept their weight. One heavy evening, made up for the next day, does not stick.
The shaadi game plan
- 1Eat before you go. Dinner at eleven means arriving starving. Have a protein snack at seven or eight — two boiled eggs, a cup of dahi, a handful of roasted chana — and you will eat far less.
- 2Do not starve all day 'to save calories'. A normal breakfast and lunch with protein beats arriving with a 1,500-kcal hunger.
- 3Walk the buffet before you pick up a plate, then build it: half meat and protein (tikka, seekh kebab, karahi pieces), a quarter salad and raita, a quarter one carb.
- 4One carb: biryani or naan, not both. A roghni naan is 380 kcal on its own.
- 5Lift the meat out of the gravy. Most of the oil is in the shorba.
- 6Drinks: water, a diet drink, or one cold drink — not three.
- 7One dessert, and a small portion. Share the second one.
- 8Have a line ready for 'aur lo': 'I've already had two helpings, it was wonderful.' Holding a plate with something on it helps.
- 9Next day: lighter meals built on protein and vegetables, a 30–45-minute walk, and your normal training.
- 10Expect the scale to jump 1–2 kg the morning after. That is salt, water and food, not fat; it settles in two or three days if you go back to normal.
The dholki and mehndi snacks
| Snack | Serving | kcal |
|---|---|---|
| Samosa | 1 | 250 |
| Pakora | 4 pieces | 220 |
| Chana chaat | 1 bowl | 250 |
| Barfi / mithai | 1 piece | 160 |
| Jalebi | 2 pieces | 230 |
| Kashmiri tea | 1 cup | 150 |
If it is your own wedding, or your family's
- The months before a wedding are when crash diets happen. Losing weight fast before the baraat mostly loses water and muscle, and it comes back by the walima. Start early instead — our 10-kg-in-3-months guide shows the pace that holds.
- Keep two or three short strength sessions a week through the busiest weeks. Twenty-five minutes is enough to hold on to muscle.
- Sleep is the first thing weddings take. Protect it where you can; short sleep makes every buffet harder to resist.
If you have diabetes
- One portion of rice or naan, with protein and salad first — the order and the company slow the sugar rise.
- Walk after you eat, even 10 minutes around the venue. Short, light walks after sitting lower blood sugar, as a 2022 meta-analysis in Sports Medicine showed.
- Desserts are the hardest part: one small portion, and check your sugar as your doctor has advised.
- Do not change your medicines for a wedding without talking to your doctor. Our type 2 diabetes guide has more.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many calories are in a shaadi dinner?
A loaded plate — biryani, mutton qorma, a roghni naan, two seekh kebabs, a cold drink, gajar halwa and two gulab jamun — is about 2,400 kcal, and wedding cooking is often oilier than our table assumes. A plate of two pieces of chicken tikka, half a plate of biryani, salad, raita and one gulab jamun is about 770 kcal.
How do I not gain weight during wedding season?
Eat a protein snack before you leave, build half your plate from tikka, kebabs and salad, have one carb (rice or naan, not both), one dessert and water or a diet drink, then eat lighter and walk the next day. Research shows people who compensate after heavy days are the ones who keep their weight steady.
Is biryani or naan worse at a wedding?
Both are heavy: a plate of biryani is about 550 kcal and a roghni naan about 380. The real problem is having both, plus gravy. Pick one — a half plate of biryani or one plain naan — and put protein and salad beside it.
Should I skip meals before a wedding to save calories?
No. Arriving at an 11 pm dinner after starving all day usually means eating far more. Have a normal breakfast and lunch with protein, and a small protein snack in the early evening.
How do I lose the weight after wedding season?
Most of the jump the morning after a function is water and salt, and it settles in a few days. For real fat gained over the season, go back to a steady calorie deficit, high protein, strength training and daily walking. At 0.5 kg a week, a season's 2–3 kg is gone in about six weeks.
Can I still have dessert at weddings?
Yes — one dessert, in a small portion. A gulab jamun is about 150 kcal and 100 g of gajar halwa about 280. It is the second and third sweet, plus the cold drinks, that turn one evening into a lasting kilo.
